Great Smoky Mountain National Park Service Project

100 Years – 100 Miles

Great Smoky Mountain Council and Daniel Boone Council

100th Anniversary Service Project

for the

Great Smoky Mountains National Park

This is a service project for the Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP) by the Great Smoky Mountain Council (GSMC) and the Daniel Boone Council (DBC) of the Boy Scouts of America to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America.  The ability levels for the individual projects range from very easy to very difficult, will be tailored made to each units request, and thus can be completed by either Packs, Troops, or Crews.  This project is being planned and organized by the Order of the Arrow.

Here is a short description of the goals for this service project:

1)      During September and October of 2009, the GSMC and the DBC will provide the manpower necessary to hike all of the trails in the GSMNP in order to complete the following:

a.      Inspect, inventory, and photograph all of the trail signs in the park (GPS if possible)

b.      Clean  Trail Head and Trail Regulation and Safety signs

c.       Repaint Trail Head signs as needed

d.      Replace trail signs that the Park already has designated to be replaced

e.       Complete trail inspections and trail/campsite cleanup

f.       Carry mulch to backcountry privies

2)        During March of 2010 the identified trail signs will be replaced

These projects have a wide range of difficulty:

1)      A, B, C and E can be completed by any unit: Den, Patrol, Pack, Troop or Crew.  Trail Head and Regulation signs are very accessible from the roads or major trails and only Trail Head signs would need to be painted.  Difficulty for these projects is determined by how far you want to hike and/or backpack.

2)      Replacing signs (D) is very difficult and will require pulling the old sign out of the ground and replacing it.  The Park has very stringent requirements on how this is done and this will require skill and work.

3)      Carrying mulch (F) is also difficult as the mulch is heavy and requires special packs.

Some projects can be completed without any hiking, some with just a short day hike, some will be long day hikes, and some that require 1, 2 or even 3 days of backpacking.  It will be up to each unit to determine the difficulty level of the project they would like to complete.  There is not a size limit for day activities but overnight camping will be limited to 8 participants unless prior approval from the Park is attained.

Each unit will have a window of 6 weeks to complete their project(s) from September 15th through November 1st.  Therefore, units may complete more than one project if they desire to do so.  Please fill out a different form for each project desired.  This sign-up sheet is for the Fall of 09 only.  The Great Smoky Mountains National Park will provide the necessary tools and equipment to complete the projects.  Units will be notified by August 15th of their project assignments and will be forwarded all necessary paperwork from the park.  It is the individual unit’s responsibility to apply for a Local Tour Permit.  Individuals and small groups may sign up and be paired together as needed.  Please note this if you would like to combine with another unit.  An OA Flap and a Council Strip are being designed for this event and some of the proceeds will go to help the Park buy the wood for the signs.  Forms for these patches will be forwarded at a later date.
